We are thankful for so many things.
1. All four puppies are beautiful and healthy.
2. They were all born between 2pm and 4:30pm. (In the day - not the middle of the night!!!!!)
3. Briele was here to handle everything in her calm, cool, and collected way.
4. Maelisa was a wonderful assistant.
Feeling very blessed!
And a shout out to Lisa who called me in the middle of it all and willing helped calm ME down!! ;)
Now that things have settled down a little bit, I will tell about our happy day. :)
Piper seemed all normal this morning. I used to check the dogs' temperatures regularly to know that labor was coming soon, however, since we've gotten pretty good at reading their actions I've not done that. (Dogs' temperatures drop before going into labor.)
Since yesterday was "Day number 60" (Dogs' gestation period is 56 - 63 days.) we haven't left Piper alone. I expected the puppies to come on Saturday. (I have no idea why!) So, today being Day number 61, and Piper acting perfectly normal - running around, eating, I figured we had time.
The first sign was one of the dogs growling at the other. Hmmm. I just told them to be quiet, but noted it that in my head. Around 1:00pm, Pixie (the Yorkie, not the mama dog) started acting really strangely. She kept pacing and following Piper (mama dog) around, acting very nervous. It kept going on and it seemed really odd, so I put Pixie in her crate and immediately Piper went alone to Briele's bedroom and squatted. Oh dear!
As soon as we got her into Maelisa's bedroom, which had been all prepared last week-end for this event, she sat in her whelping box and started shaking and then panting. (All signs of labor.) At that point, around 2pm, I took our middle daughter to town. We had some errands to do, and I knew Piper was in good, no - excellent hands with Briele and Maelisa.
Briele only made one phone call to me and then to the vet technician to talk her through some odd developments. Soon after, I got a very happy Voxer message from Maelisa and Briele saying that Puppy #1 had been born, that all was well and he was breathing - Praise the Lord! They did some praying over this one, as we both did over them all when labor started. :)
By the time I got home, we had 3 black and white puppies. The 4th (and last) puppy was born within about 20 minutes with brown and white markings.
I have to say that me leaving during the birthing process was strategic. I hate to admit it, but I get way more stressed out about this than Briele. As I was leaving Briele and I clarified that I had 100% confidence in her abilities to do everything right even if it meant driving Piper to the vet in the case of an emergency - where, of course, I would meet her. So, for me, it was a pretty relaxing experience today, and I got lots of time before dinner to snuggle the puppies while Maelisa bathed Piper. Briele reported that Maelisa was a wonderful assistant.
To add to the list at the top of the page, I'm thankful that my husband brought home subs for dinner tonight!!
